Hotaru's Ninja Niche

Poisons

The art of poison making can be a very complex subject involving many different ingredients and processes. To make matters even more difficult, many assassins keep their recipes well guarded due to the difficulty in discovering them. As such, I will not attempt to teach you how to make specific poisons, but give you enough information to get you started.

Ingredients

Solvents and Solutes. There are primarily two types of ingredients: solvents and solutes. Solvents are liquids which dissolve certain solids, called solutes. Many poisons consist of mixing solvents and solutes to create a solution which is then brewed to greater potency. There are some liquids, however, which need not be enhanced by solutes to create a usable poison. The primary source for information on solvents and solutes is the collection of books found in the Ankh-Morpork library. I have compiled this information into the Herbarium for ease of use.

Collecting Herbs. There are two skills required to gather herbs for use in poisons: crafts.husbandry.plant.herbal and crafts.hunting.foraging. The first skill, herbal, determines your ability to identify specific herbs while your foraging skill determines how easily you can gather the herb.

Animal Parts. Some creatures on the Disc deliver a potent sting or bite. Their venom can by extracted by removing the sac or gland from their corpse. Most are small enough to fit the presses found in the various poison labs, however there is some variance, even among a single species, so not all sacs and glands are guaranteed to fit the presses. Note that there are some other body parts mentioned in the Book of Beasts which are ground into powders rather than pressed for liquids.

Units of Measure

Liquid measurement

Unit Divisions Containers
1 drop
1 teaspoon 20 drops 1 phial
1 tablespoon 3 teaspoons 60 drops
1 ounce 2 tablespoons 120 drops
1 gill 5 ounces 600 drops
1 cup 8 ounces 960 drops
1 pint 2.5 cups 2400 drops
1 quart 2 pints 4800 drops 1 bottle
Since a dart or spike holds ten drops, simply divide the number of drops by ten to determine how many doses each amount equates.

Tools & Equipment

The following equipment can be found in the Ninja poison labs.

Grinder grinding herbs and some animal parts
Statue pressing animal sacs and glands for liquids
Vases steep plant or animal matter in a liquid
Pot heating liquids
Retort distilling liquids to their essence

Pipettes. Long Nudle sells bottles, phials and pipettes. Pipettes are useful for separating and measuring liquids. They are accurate, but each size has a bit of variance. You can always read your pipette to know exactly how much it holds.

Size Capacity Cost
teat 10 drops 8Rh 40s
tiny 20 drops 8Rh 40s
small 40 - 70 drops 12Rh 60s
medium 120 - 150 drops 16Rh 80s
large 160 - 190 drops 20Rh 100s

Poison Sales

Below are descriptions and prices of poisons that I'm capable of brewing. Prices are based on potency, difficulty of aquiring ingredient, and time required to brew.

Poison Effect Cost
Achorion Purple The most devastating poison on the disc, Achorion purple inflicts the most damage. With the correct combination of stat reducing poisons, a single dart or spike can kill a target instantly. A$100 per phial
Bloat In addition to dealing damage, bloat will cause the target's body to swell in size. Death by bloat is very messy, but if an application is non-fatal it can have tactical advantages as the target will be unable to enter doorways. The damage is somewhat inconsistent so this poison is more suitable for fun and hunting than playerkilling. A$50 per cup
Hallucination Will cause the target to hallucinate much like a spell failure would. Very useful against priests as it renders them incapable of performing rituals. A$50 per phial
Hemlock Reduces constitution. Useful when combined with a damage inflicting poison. A$20 per phial
Misdirection The target becomes directionally confused. A$100 per phial
Rage The target becomes so enraged that they start beating themselves up. The damage is not comparable to bloat or achorion, but you may find the effects of this poison have other tactical implications. A$50 per phial
Shimmering Orange Shimmering orange saps the energy from your victim, steadily reducing their GP over time. A$20 per phial
Spider Poison Reduces the target's constitution and dexterity and does small amounts of damage over time if taken in large enough doses. Very effective when combined with a damage inflicting poison. A$50 per phial
